Easy Faux Watercolor Look

March 21, 2018

Hi crafters! If you are like me, you are in awe about what some people can paint with watercolors. I keep trying and studying the techniques, but there must be some sort of magic sauce that simply eludes me. That means I have to come up with simple tricks to create the illusion of a watercolor look without possessing the actual skills.

Turns out, this is actually dead-simple. I used a large floral image (one stamp) with many elements which are already layered. I mounted the stamp onto an acrylic block and then used my ZIG Brush Pens to add color to the stamp itself. You can use Tombow Markers, Distress Markers, or any other “wet” kind of marker.

You only have to be careful to not have the color dry on the stamp. It won’t hurt it, it just won’t stamp great. If you have any sort of stamp press (MISTI, the one from Tim Holtz, etc) you could mount your stamp there and color up parts of it, stamp it and then color another part. Since neither paper nor stamp will move, it’s safe to multistamp and work in sections.

If you only have an acrylic block and have to color up everything at once, you can do a Darth Vader on the colored stamp (breath on it and moisturize it like that) or use a mister to very carefully add moisture.

Once stamped I like to go over the image with a very fine paint brush and some water and muddy up the lines a bit. Then it looks more like I painted it myself (as if I could ever do that 😀 ).

For the background, I stamped the exact same stamp in black for some contrast. Since most of it is covered up with the front panel, it really doesn’t take away from the bright watercolor “painting”.

Thank you for stopping by today! I hope you got inspired!

Watercolor Layering with the Cutest Monster Ever

February 24, 2018

A Million Thanks. Card by Julia Altermann. Stamp by Katzelkraft. Colored with Watercolors (DI = Distress, ZCC = Zig Clean Color Real Brush, ZAG = Zig Art und Graphic): DI Walnut Stain. ZAG: 013. ZCC: 043, 044.

I’m always tickled when I (re)discover a company that makes images as if they were anticipating my needs. I have shared projects from Katzelkraft before here and here, but they have recently come out with a set of cute monsters and now I. Can’t. Even! Naturally, I had to buy express shipping to get those cuties and color them up right away (if you’re following me on Facebook or IG, you’ve seen glimpses already).

(if you’re receiving my newsletter, please hop on over to the website to check out the video)

As always, I am also keen on trying out new techniques and for this guy, I wanted to see how I could layer watercolors. They are easily re-activated when you wet them, so it was a challenge to apply darker shades to deepen the shadows and still not end up with those annoying “drying lines” all over my image.

Precise Watercoloring with a Blender Pen

October 2, 2017

How are you guys? Today I wanted to share a very easy tutorial on how to apply watercolors very precisely. I always struggle with that – either I am using too much water, or too little, and then everything starts to run. For a control freak like me, that’s the moment where I usually start to panic, so was wondering how I could reign in the watercolor and still get that wonderful look. Challenge accepted?
