Hey crafters! I had to break out my pencils again and give the no-line coloring technique on kraft another go. And with the adorable images from My Favorite Things, I could use my beloved white Luminance pencil that just glows on kraft and black paper.
I started out by stamping the cake, masking it, and then stamping the hippo slightly on top of it so it looks like he’s peeking out from behind the cake. Masking is such an easy technique, but yields such great results it even enhanced any simple card design by a mile. For stamping, I used a light ink that would eventually fade into the kraft. You just have to make sure that you can actually see the lines while coloring. One trick I like to use is to trace the stamped lines with my white pencil very lightly immediately after stamping. This will ensure that I will see where to color, even if I have to take a break.
As with all of my pencil coloring, which I learned from Kit and Clowder, I work in layers. The first two layers are usually just to make sure that I feel comfortable with the amount of light and shadow in my image. The subsequent layers are the ones where I apply pressure and make sure that the color is thick and covers the paper underneath. I think that worked out rather well, didn’t it?
