You guys know I love to use my colored pencils, but it takes time to build up all the layers. You have to start light, and work your way up to a solid coverage. Well, you can speed up this process and today I want to show you how I used Inktense pencils and my Polychromos to color this adorably image by Whimsy Stamps.
The idea behind combining watercolor and colored pencils is that you can skip at least one, if not two layers of the colored pencils. The watercolor is easy and fast to apply and serves perfectly as a base layer for the lightest parts of your image. Especially if you have trouble blending towards the highlights, using watercolor for that base coloration is a neat and easy trick.
On this particular project, you could have even stopped after the watercolor layer, and just left it at that if you prefer a softer coloration. But you know me, I always have to go full contrast, I can’t help myself.
Thank you for stopping by today! If you want to learn more about how to color with colored pencils, I can whole-heartedly recommend the coloring classes by Kit & Clowder!
