Hello crafters. Today I have a new in-depth tutorial for you. The focus of today’s video is on how to combine watercolors (ZIG Clean Color Real Brush) and colored pencils (Polychromos) to create deep shadows and rich details in your colored images. I’ve created this card about a year ago, but never got around to share it. I just rediscovered this video and thought it was about to time, especially since I love the results!
Even though I used ZIG Clean Color Real Brush markers, you can of course use any watercolor medium that you like! You don’t even have to use brush markers: you can use pencils, pans, or tubes – whatever you have on hand. The important factor in this first step is to create a light base color, and to leave room for shadows and highlights (meaning: don’t go too dark in this step yet!).
I also stamped Freddie the Dragon on paper with a linen texture (got it off eBay, sorry, no link). That is totally optional, and this technique will of course also work on regular paper. I just find that the linen structure adds additional interest which can’t be had with regular paper, but it’s your own choice. The texture will be enhanced especially once we get to the colored pencils.
As always, my mantra with colored pencils is to work in layers. And if you want to learn more about working with this medium, my heartfelt recommendation is to take some online classes with Kit & Clowder (if you sign up with one of their classes, let Alyce know I sent you. I will get a tiny commission, and it’s no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!). They are my absolute favorite, and I keep learning new stuff with every class they release! Oh, and you can use any of your colored pencils, whatever you have at hand! I prefer Polychromos, but Prismacolor will work just as well and if you have another kind, try that before buying something new!
Last but not least I can recommend always having a Prismacolor white pencil (yes, Prisma and not Poly) because the Prisma just blends your colors more in “creamy” fashion, and it looks gorgeous. The sentiment on the card is from Whimsy Stamps as well, and the patterned paper I used as a strip on the side is from My Favorite Things and of course I had to add some glitter and also star sequins from Pretty Pink Posh.
I have also uploaded my Polychromos coloring chart. I’ve explained on the download page how to read the chart. Enjoy!
Thank you for stopping by today! I hope you got inspired!
