Fluttery greetings, crafters! You might have seen today’s star of the card – the cute little owl Ruby by Purple Onion Designs – earlier this year if you were following me on Instagram as I had been coloring him for the 30 Day Coloring Challenge. My Brother Scan ’n Cut cut him out and of course I had to use him on a card!
The coloring on the owl and the banner (also cut with the Scan ’n Cut) was done with my Polychromos pencils and the paper I used is Bazzill Marshmallow Card Shoppe. It’s heavy and sturdy, and it has just the lightest bit of tooth, for those of you who don’t like to use watercolor paper for that reason. As always, I colored – patiently – in many layers. The owl’s feathers are actually 5 layers, and the shadow areas on the banner are 4 layers.
For the background, I grabbed my Gansai Tambi watercolors and applied them to the card base after having wet it first with clean water. I wanted to have a fresh look and combining yellow with blue or mint is safe, you won’t end up with unpleasant colors. I love how the watercolor dries and gives you a harsh edge! I know some people don’t like that, but it’s the look I am always aiming for.
For additional interest, I pooled a bit of silver thread behind the owl and banner, which I adhered with foam tape. Of course this card just demanded some sequins in colors matching the watercolor, so I rummaged through my Pretty Pink Posh container and found the exact right colors! And I added a few silver dots with my Stardust pen. They are not in-your-face obvious, but just a subtle enhancement.
Thank you for stopping by today! I hope you get inspired and you see that even on small images, you can add an incredible amount of detail with your colored pencils.
This card goes off to Addicted To Stamps and More “Make Your Mark”.
