Hello! If you’re reading this, it means you’ve discovered that my little blog has moved from Blogger to WordPress and has been treated to it’s own URL, which is now http://just-one-more-card.com.
I’m super thrilled that my move across blogging platforms has been so easy. Past experience had made me weary of WordPress, but it seems that in the past two years everything that I had to laboriously hack and code myself is now a widget, plugin, or standard setting. Talk about progress!
Anyhow, for you, nothing much changes except that my blog looks nicer (I hope), and you have more options to follow me, specifically the “Subscribe via Email” option in the sidebar. I’ve gotten some emails that you guys were looking for this, so here it is! If you’re on a tablet or smartphone, the blog should display in a responsive layout and be pleasing on the eye, no longer an ugly minimalistic layout.
If you have been following me via RSS, please resubscribe (the follow buttons are on the top of the sidebar) – I’ve tried to forward all subscribers to this new blog, but I’m honestly not sure if it worked, so I’d be super grateful if you’d just click the little RSS button. And if you find anything that’s broken, just leave me a comment or drop me a line via the Contact form and I’ll try to get it fixed asap.
Huge thanks to Laura Sterckx who will make the same bold move soon and who gave me the courage to try this myself. I probably would have stuck with Blogger and all its limitations if not for her. And kudos to 17th Avenue Design for the sweet theme. I’ll be able to easily change my color theme based on seasons 😀
For those interested in how to do that technically:
I got my own domain at a German hosting provider (you can pick whomever you want) and installed WordPress. Since I work in tech support, it’s super easy for me but if you don’t feel comfortable, ask your hosting provider if they can help out. Some even offer one-click installs from within your domain management.
I set up everything in terms of theme and widgets and stuff before I imported the content because I didn’t want to loose any comments (people were commenting while I was setting up my blog, so I wanted to be done with all the basic stuff before pulling the content over), then used the Blogger to WordPress plugin to move my content over (WordPress -> Tools -> Import -> Blogger). That takes a while and you might have to restart it. I found that it said it hadn’t imported all of my images, but they are all there, so go figure.
Then I used the WordPress -> Tools -> Import -> Categories & Tags Converter plugin to turn my blogger tags (which had been converted to categories in WP) back into tags. Easy peasy, took a few seconds.
After checking that everything was pretty much ok, the scary part happens (at least for me): you need to redirect everyone from Blogger to WordPress, so when someone clicks a link to a post in Blogger, they are rerouted to the same post in your new WordPress setup. Knowing a bit about WP setups and the technology behind it, I was scared out of my brains to do that, but the wonderful Chaitali pointed me to the “SEO Blogger to WordPress Migration with 301 Redirect” plugin, which is literally heaven-sent! It’s a two click process, and their documentation (albeit a little bit out of date) is still easy enough to follow.
Let me know if you like the new look!
