Do you know the feeling when you see a card and your jaw simply drops to the ground (and stays there)? That’s what has happened to me when I saw the super-talented Laura Sterckx make a watercolor card from Simon Says Stamp’s February card kit. I always wanted to make a card like this, but never knew how – watching her video gave me one of those “THAT’s how you do it!” moments.
I was so afraid I wouldn’t be able to create a card like this that mine is pretty much a replica of Laura’s card, so all the credit goes to her. But I’m so insanely happy about how mine turned out that I just had to share it here:
|My attempt at replicating Laura’s techniques (and Laura’s card, as it turned out)|
I embossed the flower stamps from the card kit with Versamark and white embossing powder on Tim Holtz watercolor card stock. Any card stock would work, but his is pure white and that goes together so very well with card bases.
The green stripes of patterned paper are from the paper that came in the card kit; I needed something that would be a good contrast against the white watercolor card stock but still fit with the overall color scheme.
I used the sentiment from the card kit stamp set and embossed it on vellum. Since I knew I had to use some sort of glue on the vellum, I stamped some of the solid flowers from the stamp set on it first, using Hero Arts shadow inks. The yellow and pink flowers would mask the glue dots a bit.
It was also in one of Laura’s videos that I had seen the technique of putting a mess of string on a card. When I first saw it I wasn’t sure if I liked it, but when I was putting together this card, I just had to try it and I think it looks gorgeous.
|Look closely and you’ll see sparkle!|
Last, but not least, I sprayed the card (before attaching the sentiment) with Mr Huey’s Shine (which is colorless but add’s lots of sparkle). It also reactivated the water colors a bit and made them feather where I had colored outside of the lines, giving the card an overall softer impression. Love it!
Thank you, Laura, for your wonderful inspiration!
